For a New Zealand team that was in search of a replacement for the legendary Daniel Vettori, Mitchell Santner proved to be a like-for-like option. With his left-arm spin and contributions with the bat down the order, Santner soon became a regular in the New Zealand senior setup. Hailing from the Northern part of New Zealand, Santner made his List debut for Northern Districts in 2014 against Auckland. In the same year, he made his First-Class debut as well. His performance in the 2014-2015 domestic season coupled with Vettori’s retirement meant that Santner’s selection to New Zealand was fast-tracked. With only 19 List A matches under his belt, Santner made his international debut in an ODI against England in 2015. His Test debut came against Australia later that year. Albeit some useful performances, Santner could not consistently keep his place in the Test side but he became a regular in the ODI team. Santner played a crucial role in New Zealand reaching the finals of the 2019 ICC World Cup. He scored his maiden Test century against England in 2019.
